Kevin Parks

Rev. Kevin L. Parks

Associate Minister & New Members Ministry

Kevin was an educator of music in the Camden City School system for 32 years.

Seventeen years as a Band Director at the High School, elementary schools and middle schools. During which time he was called to teach piano and choir at the same High School where he started as the Band Director. Kevin accepted the position where he remained the Choir Director for 15 years. Kevin would not only teach music but would teach his student’s lessons from the bible in his general music classes. His choir only sang gospel music. Every year he would take his choir up and down the east coast, as far north as Canada and as far south as Atlanta winning1st, 2nd, 3rd and one 4th place trophies putting them in the top 20% of all choirs across the USA. If you could only imagine African American and Hispanic students singing gospel music in a European environment winning trophies was a sight to behold. His choir would always start any performance with “Total Praise”. Kevin would always minister to his students the meaning of the words they were singing.

As a native of Camden, born and educated in the Camden school District, Kevin would continue his formal music education at the Westminster Choir College, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree. Kevin gave back to the city the gift God gave him (the gift of music). At the age of 4 Kevin heard the pipe organ playing “Wade in the Water”, he went home that day and played it on the newly purchased piano his grandmother brought with two hands). At that point, Kevin started his formal training on the piano, by the time Kevin was 16, he had landed his first church job where he played and wrote music for the choir to sing. Kevin continued his church ministry as Minister of Music at Bethel AME Church in Camden, NJ.

As Kevin would continue to grow in the ministry of music he would feel the tugs on his heart strings to preach the word of God. At the age of 11, Kevin would go to his room and pray by candle light as he always did, but this one particular time in the midst of praying Kevin heard a voice call him to preach, not only did he hear a voice but he saw a vision as well (the feet of Jesus), at which point he told his mother and grandmother. Kevin would pursue the directive, but was laughed at, and ridiculed for it. But God’s word will not come back empty. God kept the fire burning inside him. God put Kevin under the late Rev. Jackson where he studied the word of God and was preaching by age 11. But as the evil one would have it, put peer pressure and the desire to be accepted by others as one of he guys. But, yet again, I say God’s word will not come back empty, God allowed Kevin to become an empty sponge, soaking up every word of God he read and heard. Kevin would remain in church where he grew in the shadow of God’s word, and became a Sunday School Teacher for the adult classes. Once again Kevin felt God’s tug on him to preach the word of God. This led him to further growth in the Lord by attending the AME Ministerial Institute at Princeton University and finally becoming ordained by the Delaware Valley and Vicinity Ordination Organization as a Minister of the Gospel, October 2, 2016. Kevin is the Director of Christian Education and leads the New Member’s Classes and plays the organ.
